Home Charging

The easiest way to charge your plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle at home is to install an electric vehicle charger. Installing your own charger is also an efficient way to charge, as you can schedule charging times and take advantage of dedicated EV energy tariffs. We offer Toyota HomeCharge to support you through your EV journey.

    A home car charging point makes charging convenient, and easily becomes a habit, it makes good use of your time, and means you rarely having to stop at a service station. Plug in overnight and wake to a charged battery, just like charging your mobile phone.

    Charging your electric car at home is cheaper than charging at a public charger. There are several off-peak energy tariffs on offer for electric car charging at home which can save you even more money when you charge at specific times.

  • Flexibility

    We highly recommend that you install an electric car charger such as Toyota HomeCharge, which we can help you with, however if needed, you can even plug-in to a domestic socket.

Installing Toyota HomeCharge

To make installing our electric car chargers easy, we have teamed up with British Gas to provide expert support at every stage.

When you order your Toyota electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid, discuss Toyota HomeCharge with your dealer, who can share your details with British Gas.

The full process typically takes 6-8 weeks, so we recommend ordering your EV charger at the same time as ordering your new vehicle.

What do I need to install a home charger?

The basics you’ll need for installation are:

  • Off-street parking: To have your own charger installed, you must have a private off-street parking space, such as a driveway or garage.
  • Freeholder permission: If you live in a block of flats or rented property, you’ll need permission from the freeholder before we can install your charger.
  • Electrical safety check: If your property was built before 2008, we’ll arrange a free video call with a British Gas engineer to make sure your electrics are up to standard. Not every property is suitable for an EV charger, and some properties might need a bit of electrical work before installation can begin. Experts from British Gas will be able to advise you free of charge.

Home Charging FAQs

A tethered EV charger has a built in cable, whereas an untethered does not have a cable included. The EV charger we provide is untethered.

The charge time will depend on the model of your vehicle, please see an outline of charge times* from a 7.4kW home charger below for our electric models:

bZ4X: 

  • 10 hours
     

Proace City Electric:

  • 4.5 hours
     

Proace Electric: 

  • 50 kWh battery - 4 hours 45 minutes
  • 75 kWh battery - 7 hours
     

RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid:

  • 2 hours 45 minutes

 

Prius Plug-in Hybrid:

*Actual charging times may vary depending on various factors, including the age, type, condition and temperature of the charging unit and the battery, the starting charge and environmental conditions at the point of use. Charge times may be longer in colder weather and if battery temperature activates safeguarding technology. 

Yes! It is completely safe to charge your vehicle in the rain.

Once you have your charger installed, it is extremely simple, just plug in and the vehicle will charge – just like any other electrical appliance.
