Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid vehicles incorporate very similar technology – but with a key difference. Both switch seamlessly between two power sources, an efficient petrol engine and a self-charging Hybrid battery, however Plug-in Hybrid vehicles feature a higher capacity battery to deliver greater electric performance when they have been plugged in to charge.

Find out more about Plug-in Hybrids (Opens in new window)

The new Toyota C-HR Plug-in Hybrid can travel exclusively in electric mode for up to 41 miles** - with no tailpipe emissions. If travelling for longer distances and its battery runs out of charge, your vehicle seamlessly switches back to operating as a Hybrid car, combining petrol and regenerated battery power to get you safely to your destination.

You can recharge a Plug-in Hybrid from a domestic power supply (3-pin plug) in approximately 6.5 hours*, making overnight charging convenient and, in many cases, economical. For optimum speed and safety, the combination of a dedicated cable and wall box unit will return a full charge in around 2.5 hours*.

*Indicative charge time, for comparison purposes. Actual charging times may vary depending on various factors, including the age, type, condition and temperature of the charging unit and the battery, the starting charge and environmental conditions at the point of use. Charge times may be longer in colder weather and if battery temperature activates safeguarding technology.

Plug-in Hybrids can be economical to own. The low CO2 emissions of Plug-in Hybrids often result in road and company car tax discounts, as well as exemption from city centre charges. And due to less wear to parts like brake pads and discs, they can be cheaper to maintain too.

Toyota Plug-in Hybrid batteries are engineered to last the lifetime of the car. For added peace of mind, every battery comes with a three year / 60,000 miles* warranty which with an annual Hybrid Health Check extends battery cover up to 10 years. When a battery reaches the end of its life, Toyota take back scheme ensure it is dealt with safely and responsibly.

*Whichever occurs sooner.

Choose the Toyota C-HR Plug-in as your company car, and pay as little as £53 per month in company car tax~ in the 2024/25 tax year. Calculate your company car tax.

Electrified power: your questions answered

Toyota started the hybrid revolution more than 25 years ago and continues to drive for a world with lower emissions. Hybrids combine electric drive with powerful petrol engines for effortless performance and convenience.

Switching seamlessly between a combustion engine and efficient EV drive, Hybrid vehicles incorporate two energy sources: a petrol engine and an electric motor.

Hybrids can use electric power to pull away and even cruise at speeds up to 30mph. Because most Toyota Hybrids are self-charging, when the battery runs low, excess power from the engine charges it back up again.

Hybrids feature pioneering, self-charging battery technology. They are known as ‘Hybrid-electric’ vehicles because they have two energy sources. This means that unlike pure electric vehicles and Plug-in Hybrids you don’t have to plug them in to recharge their batteries.

Toyota Hybrid batteries are engineered to last for the lifetime of the car. For added peace of mind, every battery comes with a five-year/100,000 miles* warranty which – with an annual Hybrid Health Check – extends battery cover for up to 10 years. When a battery reaches the end of its life, Toyota’s take-back scheme ensures it is dealt with safely and responsibly.

*Whichever occurs sooner

There are three types of Hybrid electric vehicle: mild Hybrid cars, full Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrids. Mild Hybrid cars only use their electric motors to support the engine during acceleration and cruising as the electric motor cannot power the car on its own. In a full or self-charging Toyota Hybrid, you can enjoy pure electric power when you pull away and cruise at speeds up to 30mph. Plug-in Hybrids work in the same way as a Hybrid but with a higher capacity battery for greater electric performance.

**Pure Electric Vehicle (EV) mode is only available when the car has sufficient charge. Electric range figures are the maximum official (WLTP) test values provided for comparison purposes, and can vary depending on factors such as selected grade and transmission, accessories fitted (post registration), driving style, weather conditions, speed, vehicle and battery age and vehicle load. Figures obtained after full battery charge. It is best to only compare electric range figures with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect your real life driving results.
