Toyota expands voluntary recalls involving certain Takata airbags
Toyota has rededicated itself to strengthening its commitment to safety and quality. In part, that means refocusing on putting customers and people first, by taking appropriate action. Toyota Motor Corporation is expanding its voluntary recalls involving certain Takata airbag inflators and initiating a new voluntary recall.
There are approximately 1,266,000 vehicles involved in Europe.
The vehicles involved for Europe are the Toyota Corolla, Yaris, Picnic, Avensis Verso, Tundra and Sequoia produced between March 2003 and March 2007 for the front passenger airbag inflator, and the Toyota RAV4, Yaris and Hilux produced between July 2003 and December 2005 for the front driver airbag inflator.
The countermeasures for this voluntary recall are:
- For the passenger airbag inflator, the inflator will be inspected for air leak at the dealer; only if the inflator has air leakage will it be replaced immediately with a newly-manufactured one.; Additionally, we will be replacing all of the inflators once sufficient parts become available, starting with the oldest vehicles.
- For the driver airbag inflator, it will be replaced with a newly-manufactured inflator produced by Japanese supplier Daicel.
Customers will be contacted by each national distributor in the involved countries in the coming weeks; inspection and airbag inflator replacement will be performed at no charge to customers. As of Tuesday 19th May 2015 you will be able to check if your vehicle is involved in this voluntary recall on this page.

We have been conducting various investigations on Takata-produced airbag inflators. Among the parts collected from the Japanese market, certain types of airbag inflators were found to have a potential for moisture intrusion over time. As a result, they could be susceptible to abnormal deployment in a crash. The relationship of moisture intrusion, if any, to the risk of inflator rupture is not known.
Globally, for certain types of front passenger and front driver airbag inflators which could be susceptible to deploy abnormally, we are either initiating a new voluntary recall or expanding the production period of our existing voluntary recalls to involve approximately 4,999,000 additional vehicles.
